Love at First Plunge

Couple Taking the Plunge Leads to Taking an Even Bigger Plunge!

Of all the unique “how we met” stories told by couples, Whitney and Kenny’s just might be the coolest! The couple – now engaged to be married in 2010 – saw sparks during the 2009 MSP Polar Bear Plunge, proving that warm hearts can conquer even the coldest of environments.

Whitney was in her 3rd year as a Plunge participant, enjoying the fun alongside her parents. A family friend is a member of Ravens Roost #86, and so she and her mother joined in the organization’s annual tailgate party at Sandy Point State Park. It was there that she saw Kenny and the two spent the remainder of the day talking, tailgating and having a great time. And when the fun continued post-Plunge at the bar that sponsors Ravens Roost #86, Kenny and Whitney continued the evening together as well. And the rest, as they say, is history!

She called him on Monday, their official first date was on Thursday, and the pair have been together ever since. She eventually joined the Ravens Roost – of which Kenny is now President – and on June 14, they made their engagement official.

“The Plunge has very special meaning to us now,” said Whitney. “Kenny and I count the date of the Plunge – January 24 – as our anniversary, and we will definitely be celebrating our first year together at the 2010 event.”

They are proud to say that Ravens Roost #86 is once again participating as a group, and their goal is to exceed their fundraising total from 2009.

Perhaps this happy couple can prove our long-held theory that couples that Plunge together, stay together! Best wishes to Kenny and Whitney!

As if the support from the Ravens Roosts isn’t super enough, three individual Roost members have gone above and beyond and super-sized their personal participation.  Roosters Darryl Despeaux, “Sports Steve” LaPlance, and Dan Herr are all members of the Super Plunge team, an elite group of participants that takes 24 chilly dips into the Chesapeake Bay over a 24-hour period.  Their commitment is also super-sized because instead of the minimum $50, Super Plungers must raise $10,000 to be a part of this undertaking.  But the cold, the agony and the all-nighter at Sandy Point must be well worth it to these three incredible men because all three have signed on to do it again in 2010.
