A message from Tom Schniedwind about the Cancellation of the 3 p.m. Plunge and Plunge II

After a great deal of discussion with both weather professionals and our law enforcement and medical support partners, we have come to the determination that rescheduling this weekend’s make-up Plunge is not a prudent idea. The vast majority of weather forecasting web sites and meteorologists are predicting ANOTHER significant snowfall Friday night into Saturday. Consequently, based on last weekend’s surprise storm, we do not want our Plungers to experience additional and unnecessary hazardous driving conditions.

We share your disappointment that this weekend’s storm forced our medical experts to cancel our 3:00 Plunge, but remind you that ultimately the underlying force behind this event’s success has been the indomitable spirit of Maryland’s Special Olympics athletes. There isn’t a human being on the planet that takes your frustration more personally. I implore you to consider the additional damage caused by feeling compelled to return donations made to our organization on your behalf. I, more than any of you, curse the “weather gods” for the cruel twist of fate this weekend’s snow threw at you and I on January 30. I am not a forecaster, I am not a law enforcement professional, and I am certainly not a medical specialist.

I am though, eternally grateful for all those individuals on our team in those professions who properly determined that the condition on that beach at 2:15 far surpassed any rational consideration that the event be allowed to continue. What I am, is a man who represents an unbelievably committed group of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly for 8 months of the year to help elevate our athletes to the top of the news cycle, while raising more than half of our annual operating budget through this event. At the end of the day I implore you to vent your frustration with me for ultimately making the hard decision to cancel – NOT by withholding donations made in honor of our athletes, whose very lives are adversely affected by this dip in funding.
