Be the Bear.

Join in on the state’s most successful single-day fundraiser – The MSP Polar Bear Plunge on January 26, 2008 at Sandy Point State Park. Registration begins at 9am, first plunge at noon, and second plunge at 3pm. The MSP Plunge is much more than a one-day event, it is an experience that has inspired thousands to give of themselves in support of the mission of Special Olympics Maryland. The funds raised through this event are essential in helping SOMD continue to provide the benefits of its programs to all of Maryland’s citizens with intellectual disabilities.

Sassy Spiegel's Hug-a-Palooza '08

He Came. He Hugged. He’s Still Disinfecting.

At approximately 1:04 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, 98 Rock’s own Josh Spiegel unofficially broke the Guinness World Record for the number of hugs in one hour by hugging 1,000 people. And he did it in just 34 minutes! The record will remain unofficial until Guinness World Record staff complete the verification process, but for now, we know who the King of Hugs is! Thank you to everyone who participated by hugging Josh, and congratulations to Josh for conquering his fear of human contact in pursuit of world fame.

How Do We Say Thanks?
"Forgive the overreaching nature of this correspondence.  We do hope to speak directly to each of you who made this weekend so exciting, so inspiring, and so successful.  Collectively though - We offer our sincere personal gratitude for your investment of time and energy in what former Board member Keith Mills described on the radio as a 'miracle of caring'.  Have no illusions about the root cause of this success… the example and inspiration of the athletes whose lives we celebrate, and whose future your efforts have helped to secure.  We are humbled by your compassion."

Where Do Donations Go?
The 2008 MSP Plunge will underwrite the cost of a new Special Olympics initiative known as the Young Athletes Program - an innovative "play" program for children aged 2-7 that focuses on early intervention in the development of critical physical skills. By taking part in the MSP Plunge you are not just making this world a better place for today's SOMD athletes, you are also helping to ensure a brighter tomorrow for thousands of infants and young children with intellectual disabilities. > Find out more
