Featured Team - Maggies MountiesWe have always known that our little Maggie would make a difference in this world – whether that means bringing home a gold medal from a Special Olympics event one day or becoming the first woman with Down Syndrome to get her master’s degree from an accredited university. The sky is the limit for her. Well, thanks to Maggie the “2 or 3” people turned into a team of 19 brave souls crazy enough to plunge into the balmy 34-degree Chesapeake Bay. Our team includes family members, long-time friends, and even some acquaintances who just see it as “doing the right thing” for a cause they support. The same people who have supported us since the day Maggie was born became “Maggie’s Mounties” and raised an incredible $29,000 for Special Olympics Maryland last year – a number we hope to exceed in 2009. What is overwhelming to us is that our team's spirit and generosity was focused on Maggie and what SOMD could mean for her future. Of course, it's no surprise to us! Her infectious smile and countless giggles melt the hearts of everyone she meets. Maggie is a happy 2 year old who enjoys being a kid by walking and talking all over the place, with the exception of course of the occasional bout of "terrible twos!" She is attending pre-school and loving it. Her favorite words to say are Elmo, Pizza, Ball, and of course, No! Having a child with special needs creates a bond between you and all other families of children with disabilities. The money we raise helps dreams become reality for families all across the state by having their child, brother, sister, niece, nephew, grandson, granddaughter, cousin or friend participate in Special Olympics Maryland. We hope everyone in Maryland will get involved with the MSP Polar Bear Plunge this year, either by participating or supporting someone else. Maggie and thousands of other children with intellectual disabilities thank you!. | Create an AccountRegistering for the plunge allows you to track your donations, compete with other fundraisers, connect with other plungers on the message board, email your friends about your plunge, and create your own personal webpage. But we didn’t necessarily know it would happen so soon! When we first had the idea to participate in the MSP Polar Bear Plunge, we figured we would be able to round up maybe 2 or 3 crazy people to join us, and set a conservative goal of raising $1,000 in the process.
